This installation is part of a large body of photographic and video material I have accumulated from Pilgrim Street’s decommissioned Fire Station Headquarters (1933). To date this is the third exhibition to use this material. The first was Intersection in 2008. Four of the photographs from this exhibition can be seen in images number two and three. These are of interior surfaces beyond The Chief’s Office. I call them Interçades. I prefer to work with empty spaces because they allow space for interpretation. There are over one hundred rooms designed to support all aspects of a fireman’s working life including administrative offices, bars, canteens and dorms. However, I became increasingly drawn to the power centre of the building – The Chief’s Office. Although it is now ‘empty’ there is still a strong sense of presence -as if it is still performing. It looks like a stage, in fact it could quite easily be mistaken for a set. I have created a room of possibilities, without resolve. The projected piece has a looped cello sample interwoven with ambient sounds from the video recording. This mirrors the lack of resolution; it just lingers, like the building as it stands today, uncertain of its future. The only certainty is that this installation adds another layer to its history. 03.09.09 Michelle Hobby - Transmutation Group MFA Exhibition @ Northumbria University 04.09.08 Michelle Hobby - Intersection Group MFA Exhibition @ Northumbria University 12.06.08 Congratulations Johnny!
